Can I Install My Own Electric Fireplace, Stove or Insert?
If you are thinking of putting an electric fireplace, stove, or insert into your home, you may be wondering if it is possible to cut back costs by doing your own installation. The answer is that it is quite simple to install your own electric fireplaces. Our Fireplaces come completely assembled. That’s right, they are not “knockdown” meaning you’ll have to fiddle with a screw driver for 2 hours trying to get everything together. The actual electric insert comes completely assembled as well. All you’ll have to do is simply slide the insert into the opening and plug it in into the wall!
Unlike gas or wood fireplaces, electric fireplaces, stoves, and inserts do not require any kind of outside duct or vent. This means that you will not need to cut through the house’s installation or interfere with the outer shell of your home to install them. Electric fireplaces and stoves can be installed in any room of your house, or even in an office building. Most models are fully portable, and can be repositioned like any other piece of furniture. The most important requirement is an electrical outlet of the proper type. While some models of electric fireplace can run on a standard plug, others require a heavy-duty 240-volt connection. Unless noted in the product descriptions, all units plug into any regular 110-volt wall connection.
Installing an electric insert in an existing fireplace might take a small amount of handyman skill to adjust the trim around the insert to the size of the fireplace opening and to seal the chimney duct to prevent drafts. If you are concerned about rain and other moisture coming through your chimney, you might want to put a cap on it. This will render the chimney unsuitable for wood burning fires, but will make your home more energy efficient. Another consideration when installing an electric insert is how to run the power cord to your electrical outlet in an attractive manner. An unsightly cord could spoil the charm of your lovely new electrical insert.
