What Does The Term Zero Clearance Mean? HEADING_TITLE
A term that you may often hear when dealing with fireplaces and inserts is “zero clearance.” A zero clearance designation for a fireplace or insert simply means that you are not required to leave any clearance room between the metal of the fireplace and any flammable materials. For example, a zero clearance fireplace can rest directly on the floor, whereas a contemporary stove would need to be raised up on feet to eliminate the risk of the floor catching on fire. In addition, zero clearance fireplaces can be placed directly against an interior wall, giving the look of a built in fireplace mantle even where no contemporary unit exists.

The term zero clearance also means that the fireplace unit can be installed even in tight areas, although it is recommended to leave a small amount of space around the insert to allow the metal to expand as it becomes warm. Zero clearance fireboxes are very flexible in terms of style, because they do not require a surrounding hearth to protect them. For a sleek, modern look, for example, you can choose a zero clearance firebox with a stainless steel surround set directly into a wall. Any drywall or wood framing can be built right up to the metal frame of a zero clearance fireplace.

The reason why electric fireplaces require zero clearance is that they are so well insulated that the outside of the unit does not become hot enough to ignite combustible materials. This can be an important safety consideration, especially in older houses or homes with pets or small children. Nearly all electric fireplaces are designated zero clearance, and certain models of wood burning and gas fireplaces qualify as well, giving you the flexibility you need to choose the perfect heating system for your home.
